Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US)

Last year?before Intel launched its ultrabook initiative?Samsung staked a claim to the thinnest Windows laptop with the 13.3-inch Samsung Series 9 (since replaced by an even slimmer 2012 model). This year Samsung has thin-sliced another executive status symbol with the Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US) ($1,499 list), which the company claims is almost 50 percent more compact than any existing 15-inch laptop. Samsung doesn't call it an ultrabook, but at 3.6 pounds and 0.6 inch thick, the new Series 9 (NP900X4B-A02US) is barely heavier than many 13.3-inch ultrabooks?and makes systems that meet Intel's 0.83-inch-thick guideline for 15-inch ultrabooks, such as the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG, look chubby.

It also makes us a little unsure how to classify it; except for its larger screen, the Series 9 15-inch's ultrabook-like components keep it from qualifying as a true desktop replacement like our Editors' Choice Samsung Series 7 Chronos (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list, 4 stars) or the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (late 2011) ($1,799 direct, 4 stars). Probably the new Series 9's closest competitor is HP's Envy 14 Spectre ($1,399.99 direct, 4 stars), which offers the same Intel Core i5 processor, 128GB solid-state drive, and 1,600-by-900 screen resolution, albeit in a screen one inch smaller. Like the Spectre, the Series 9 15-inch is a way to stand out from the ultrabook crowd, even as ultrabooks stand out from the laptop crowd.

Design
The Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US) boasts an aluminum one-piece shell in a handsome shade? Samsung calls it Titan Silver?with a touch of dark blue. It measures 0.6 by 14 by 9.3 inches (HWD), with an ample palm rest and space on either side of the black tile keyboard.

The keyboard has dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys but no numeric keypad. It offers a tolerable typing feel, but shallower travel than the Spectre and some other thicker systems' keyboards, and is backlit, but quite dimly?we had trouble detecting the backlight in all but the darkest environments. The large touchpad has clickable lower corners instead of dedicated mouse buttons; it has a smooth, almost slippery feel. Annoyingly, it occasionally failed to register our taps on the touchpad surface, but a driver update during our testing helped.

The 15.0-inch display is not dim or dark in the slightest?it's impressively bright even with the backlight dialed down a notch, with a matte finish, sharp contrast, and crisp colors as well as the extra resolution (1,600 by 900 versus 1,366 by 768) that's a real treat for multitaskers or image editors and unavailable on 13.3-inch ultrabooks except for the Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 ($1,049 list, 4 stars). Impressively for such a thin system, the screen shows next to no flex or wobble when grasped by the corners, as opposed to more bendy ultrabooks such as the Toshiba Portege Z835-P370.

Features
Samsung earns kudos for including an SD card slot?hidden behind a nifty folding door on the laptop's right side?and three USB ports?two USB 3.0 on the right and one USB 2.0 on the left. Other ports are miniaturized, with a micro Ethernet port (dongle included) and micro HDMI port (dongle not included) on the left and a micro VGA port (dongle not included) on the right. In case you haven't guessed, the super-skinny Samsung has no optical drive.

Wireless connectivity options include the trifecta of 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), but not the Intel Smart Connect technology that lets the HP Envy 14 Spectre and Dell XPS 13 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars) update e-mail, social network, and other information while the system sleeps.

Samsung backs the Series 9 15-inch with a one-year warranty, and fills its 128GB SSD?all but a scanty 57GB of it out of the box?with an array of helpful system-settings utilities, 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security, Skype, the WildTangent games suite, and a recovery partition. The system's cold boot times, helped by a Fast Boot utility that turns off Windows 7's startup animation, averaged a blazing 17 seconds and its resume-from-sleep times 2.5 seconds by our stopwatch.

Performance
The Series 9 15-inch has the same 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processor as numerous other ultrabooks ranging from the Dell XPS 13 to our Editors' Choice HP Folio 13, but teams it with 8GB of memory instead of the usual 4GB. That helped it post an impressive PCMark 7 performance score of 3,611, topping the other Core i5-2467M ultrabooks we've tested (such as the Folio 13 at 3,146 and Envy Spectre at 3,221). The Samsung also wins the Core i5-2467M class crown in our Handbrake video encoding and Adobe Photoshop CS5 image editing tests, with times of 2 minutes 28 seconds and 5 minutes 20 seconds, respectively.

Like other systems with Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics, the NP900X4B-A02US is no choice for serious gamers, struggling to around 18 frames per second apiece in our Lost Planet 2 (DirectX 9) and Crysis (DirectX 10) tests. It finished half a step behind the MacBook Air 13-inch (4,781 versus 4,561) in the 3DMark06 graphics benchmark.

The Series 9 15-inch's non-removable 62Wh battery lasted a solid 7 hours (plus 1 minute) in our MobileMark 2007 rundown test, trailing behind the HP Folio 13 (7:33) and Envy 14 Spectre (8:04) but outlasting the Dell XPS 13 (5:58) and Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 (6:09) by roughly an hour apiece?and most full-sized 15-inch laptops by considerably more.

Speaking of full-sized 15-inch laptops, can the Samsung Series 9 15-inch replace one? It's a tempting proposition?we can't emphasize enough that this machine is just marvelously thin and light, every bit the showpiece that the 13.3-inch Series 9 is. On the other hand, if your workload involves serious number-crunching or video encoding, you'll probably choose to carry a slimline laptop's one or two extra pounds rather than settle for what amounts to the performance of an ultrabook.

By contrast, if your workload centers on office productivity suitable for an ultrabook, your choice will come down to the Samsung's big, bright screen versus some ultrabooks' better keyboards and full-sized ports. The latter factors, and its lower price, keep the HP Folio 13 in place as our ultrabook Editors' Choice, but the Series 9 15-inch joins the HP Envy 14 Spectre as a premium alternative.

Entering the Culpeper home of Brenda Crist, you are likely to encounter a success story of the People for Pets Foundation ? one probably stretched out on the floor, and another watching you closely from underneath a couch.

?The calico on the floor is Marmalade, and the black and white one is Mr. Murphy.? Crist says, ?They?re both adopted, but now they?re so fat I?m trying to get them to lose weight.?

Also throughout the house are the supplies and signs for the major rummage sale to be held by PFPF this Saturday March 31 at St. Stevens?s Episcopal Church. Crist, the treasurer and secretary for the foundation, says the event is a major fundraiser.

?People are free to donate items and some baked goods will be for sale,? Crist mentions, ?and lunch is provided so we encourage everyone to come out and support us this weekend.?

The People for Pets Foundation is a Culpeper non-profit organization that works to provide homes and care for local animals. PFPF functions as a releasing agent with the Culpeper Animal Shelter, which means that they take animals, specifically cats, from the shelter and provide them medical attention and a temporary home with a foster mother.

The cats spend a period of time becoming rehabilitated, and are then adopted by the community.

?We get them and we adopt them? says Crist. ?We get them all of their shots. Then their foster mothers take care of them and help them with socialization.? These foster mothers provide for anywhere between ten to 30 cats, depending on the time of the year.

?Spring is kitten season, so we can expect to have more.? Crist mentions.

Currently, PFPF works closely with the Culpeper Animal Hospital, and has numerous projects such as the ?Spay a Momma? and the ?Trap, Neuter, Release? programs that all go to fight one of the biggest problems homeless animals have: over-population.

Due to the expense and necessity of getting stray cats and dogs spayed, a major goal of PFPF is finding a way of getting the procedure done more efficiently.

?One of our dreams,? Crist says, ?is to have in the Culpeper area a low cost spay/ neuter clinic.?

As a result of PFPF?s activities, the euthanization rate for cats in Culpeper has dropped from 42 percent down to 10, and the organization has spent more than $15,000 in medical treatments and spaying for local animals. All told, more than 500 animals were given to good homes by People for Pets in 2011.

?We think animals should be cared for and loved. That?s really what our organization is all about,? Crist said.

People for Pets consists of a seven-member board as well as several volunteers. Many of the board members are also foster mothers, which is itself a vitally needed role.

?The people we want as foster mothers are those who have animal knowledge and kindness towards animals.? Crist said. ?They are the people we cherish.?

An Afghan policeman laced food with sleeping pills and then killed nine of his colleagues?as they slept Friday, a police officer reportedly said.

The?attack in the eastern province of Paktika was?the latest in a string of rogue shootings that has also targeted foreign forces.

Two policemen?were detained after the attack in Yahya Khil district, while a third officer was missing. It was not clear if the assailant was among the pair detained, said Mukhlis Afghan, the provincial governor's spokesman.

Citing Paktika police chief Dawlat Khan Zadran, The New York Times reported that the assailant, who it named as Assadullah, put drugs in the food served Thursday night.

Construction-led improvement in NZ business confidence ...

The construction industry is leading business confidence higher in the latest National Bank Business Outlook survey, reflecting expectations of the Christchurch rebuild kicking into life.

However, the bank?s chief economist Cameron Bagrie warns the improving sentiment is not occurring throughout the economy, with export commodity prices still weakening and the government?s belt-tightening keeping consumers? wallets locked away.

Nonetheless, a net 34 percent of businesses expect better times in the year ahead, up six percentage points from the February survey, and sentiment is even stronger when firms are asked what they expect for their own businesses.

A net 39 percent of the 421 firms nationwide which responded to the monthly survey say the year ahead looks better for their own enterprise, up eight points on last month to a 7-month high.

Employment, investment and profit expectations were also on the rise, although Bagrie warned there could be an element of current optimism being based on the expectation that ?it surely can?t get any worse??

?The process of balance sheet repair has further to run. Commodity prices are easing. Tighter fiscal policy will take more money out of our pockets than we get back,? he said, but there were rays of sunshine among the challenges with agricultural output up strongly after a good growing season, higher property prices and ?a lot? of improvement in the global economy, at least for now.

The latest survey showed New Zealand was ?moving in the right direction, but with a sting in the tail,? said Bagrie. ?Improvements are being led by housing and construction. It?s growth, so we?ll take it, but with the current account deficit at 4 percent of gross domestic product and net external liability position at 72 percent of GDP, the housing market can only get us so far.?

Chesapeake Bay Tour de Cure Set To Raise Funds for Diabetes ...

More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to take Maryland?s Eastern Shore by storm on May 19 as the Chesapeake Bay Tour De Cure sets off to raise funds for diabetes research.

Diabetes is a national epidemic and one that affects Maryland and the Eastern Shore communities even greater proportions.

?The numbers are very high,? said Kathy Rogers, executive director of the American Diabetes Association Maryland regional office. ?Nearly 10 percent of all adults in Talbot County have diabetes, compared to 10.7 percent in Kent County and 12.1 percent in Dorchester County.?

The event marks the first time that a Tour de Cure, a national event organized by the American Diabetes Association, will take place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Event highlights:

?Local indie/rock/soul musician Kentavius Jones will perform on the eve of the event, May 18; all riders who generate $1,000 or more will be invited to a VIP party with Jones at Cottingham Farm

?Live band performance by Chester River Runoff will take place the day of the event, May 19

?Attendees will have access to many event festivities, including a beer garden, children?s activities

Sylwia Wiesenberg, founder of Tonique Fitness, is obsessed?with fresh unprocessed food, local markets, and changing people?s lives, especially regarding their fitness level. Although Slywia?s ultimate dream is to open up a fitness camp in upstate New York for children whose parents cannot afford fitness education, she wants them and others to learn about the importance of fitness and healthy eating.

However, her focus is on the bride, as well as on women in general, for today?s interview.

?Ever since I was little girl, I wanted to make people feel better about themselves,? says Sylwia. ?I would like Tonique Fitness to help create a woman who looks in the mirror and is happy at what she sees because she is firm and fit, and she feels confident. And I don?t just want to change their bodies, but their lifestyles. It is not about being skinny, but about being healthy, fit, and feeling comfortable in your own body.?

Eight years after founding Tonique Fitness, the media has taken notice. Sylwia has been featured in numerous U.S. and international publications, and her Tonique Mat DVD was named by Fitness Magazine ?The Best Lower Body Transformer? for Top Ten Workout DVDs 2012.

Tonique has sold thousands of videos as well as downloads based truly on word of mouth, rather than celebrity endorsement. ?I know many celebrities but I don?t want to use them,? says Sylwia. ?One magazine said that they would do a story on Tonique, but only if I had a celebrity endorsement. But my answer was simple: that Tonique and I celebrate every woman, not just famous ones. Every woman matters to me. My focus is to devote my love and passion for women and (men too) and change the way women think about fitness.?

Sylwia created Tonique Fitness when she was pregnant with her first child. ?I went to the gym and I felt like something was missing. I felt that fitness there was just about getting thin, which I do not think is right. I believe that you should give your best at the gym to get good at something, not just to lose weight. I also felt like many trainers didn?t care much about feelings and what we go through to get fit and stay fit. So, I decided that I wanted to empower and inspire others; I wanted to share with people how important fitness is, and to also be an inspiration. I wanted to take fitness to the next level.?

During her pregnancy, ?many people told me to forget about having a great body after giving birth,? says Sylwia. ?They told me that ?once you have a child, your body will never be the same.? I decided that I would make a positive change to my body and stay fit forever. I knew that once you let yourself go, it would be harder to get back to a healthy body. After giving birth, many new moms came up to me and asked what my secret diet was, and my answer was workout! I also had postpartum depression, but thanks to that I decided to follow my lifetime dream. I offered free classes in my apartment building, and Tonique grew from there.?

Sylwia believes that just as brides should keep up their fitness level, so should new moms?for the sake of their children. ?For a lot of women, the moment they become moms, the stereotype is that they have to look like moms. NO! I want moms and non-moms to look not only fit, and have a firm body but to feel sexy and desired. Also, if you give yourself ME TIME you will be a better mom and feel better about yourself and set a better example for your children.? This means a healthy lifestyle, as well as exercise, which Sylwia defines foremost as movement.

?The current lifestyle I am choosing includes more movement and ?clean? eating,? says Sylwia, ?This means eating less unhealthy food, with of course occasional indulgence?and everything in moderation. If you want to eat ice cream, have ice cream?you can splurge occasionally, but indulge your taste buds with high quality food, and small portions. It is not right to say, ?food is my enemy,? or saying no to bread and other carbs. You can have carbs and pasta; you can eat everything, but just smaller amounts. Remember ? portion control, and everything in moderation. The important thing is not about being skinny, but about being fit and healthy. We must not give up food but we must not give up movement, either.?? The right food choices will help you to get in shape, rather than starving yourself and killing your tissues.

The movement Sylwia favors includes primarily leg and butt movement. ?I want everyone to develop a strong butt and legs? and once you get them both in shape, everything else comes easier, she says. ?When lunging, I want wide lunges. You build more of a butt if you go lower and longer. Recent studies show that lunges and squats are THE most beneficial for building a strong core, and are fantastic for your abs.?

Healthy eating also plays a part, according to Sylwia.? Some people equate healthy eating with expense. ?You can eat inexpensively and healthily,? she says. ?I personally do not eat meat, but I eat fish. I look at my plate as a spectrum of vitamins and minerals, proteins and fiber?trying to find the best source in protein, fiber and iron in grains such as faro, quinoa, and kasha, as well as green leafy vegetables which are packed with iron, fiber, vitamins and protein.?

Sylwias? goals for the next year are to release a new DVD or two, publish her book, and produce her television show (subject matter currently under wraps), for which Sylwia recently created a pilot. And then there?s her ?ultimate dream,? the health center for women and low-income children where ?trainers can contribute and donate their time to make a change.?

Says Sylwia, ?I want women to know that they can be the best that they can be at any age. And I want women to know that they can be beautiful at any age. If you are happy with yourself, you will be better to other people. I don?t want competitive energy with women; I want them to support each other in order to achieve their goals. And I don?t want ?skinny fat?? meaning being skinny but with no tone, no endurance and strength.? I want Tonique to create an ultimate fit and unique woman who follows her dreams.?

And Sylwia?s final message to women?

Apple cements tablet market dominance with new iPad

SYDNEY/LONDON (Reuters) - Apple Inc's newest iPad was looking like another hot seller on Friday, with hundreds queuing at stores across Asia and Europe to get their hands on a gadget likely to dominate the tablet-computer market well into next year.

The third-generation device has only a few new features, but the buzz helped propel Apple shares to a record high of $600 in New York on Thursday.

"I just got hyped into it, I guess," said David Tarasenko, a 34-year-old construction manager who was the first to pick one up from a Telstra store at midnight in Sydney.

Daniel Bader, a software developer who builds iPad apps and was queuing outside the Apple store in Munich, said: "You can't explain it."

Even in a tough economic climate in some parts of the world, many buyers, like 27-year-old Steve Henry in Paris, said they would scrimp elsewhere if necessary.

"I save money on my other purchases for high-tech shopping," said Henry, a systems engineer at a railway company who was hoping to buy his first iPad mainly to watch films and read during his more than two hours of travel per day.

The new iPad - Apple has refrained from calling it iPad 3 - has faster chips, fourth-generation wireless, a crisper display and a better camera, making it harder for competitors like Samsung's Galaxy, which also lack Apple's range of apps and content, to catch up.

On price, too, Apple's rivals will struggle to beat it. The new iPad starts at $499 in the United States, 479 euros ($630) in Germany and 42,800 yen ($510) in Japan. Only Amazon's far more basic Kindle Fire is significantly cheaper.

Analysts expect a strong start for the latest iPad and some even expect sales of the current model to overtake the iPad 2. So far, the company has sold 55 million iPads since it was launched, kicking off the tablet market, in 2010.

Apple will continue to sell the iPad 2 but has dropped its price by $100 to start at $399.

Tablet sales are expected to increase to 326 million by 2015 with Apple largely dominating the market, according to research firm Gartner, rivaling sales of desktop computers, which Gartner expects to total 368 million units this year.

MATURE PRODUCT

The enduring popularity of Apple products, and stock, have provided Chief Executive Tim Cook, who took over after the death of Steve Jobs last year, with a good start in the job.

The share price peaked at just over $600 half an hour after the first iPad went on sale, extending the market worth of the world's most valuable company to almost $560 billion.

Only a month earlier, the stock price had crossed $500 for the first time. It has jumped 45 percent this year.

Canaccord Genuity analysts raised their target price on Apple stock to $710 from $665. Dickie Chang, an analyst with technology research firm IDC, said Cook will need to do more in future to keep up the firm's astonishing momentum.

"The iPad is already a pretty mature product and it's hard to revolutionize it any further," he said.

"Going ahead, with Tim Cook at the helm now, I think he may have to come up with another product to mark his stamp. That could come in the form of launching a smaller iPad with a longer battery life, for instance."

UBS raised its target price to $675 from $550, and said the expected launch of the redesigned iPhone 5 in October was the big catalyst ahead.

SMUGGLERS

The new iPad goes on sale on Friday in 10 countries, including the United States, Canada, Singapore, France and Britain.

Most of those countries outside the United States do not yet have the faster, fourth-generation telecoms networks that the new iPad supports, but some buyers travelled from countries where it is not expected to be available for several months to get their hands on one.

"I've come from Russia to buy an iPad for my three-year-old son David," Oleg Konovalov, a newspaper salesman, told Reuters in Tokyo. "Everyone in Russia wants an iPad, but to buy it there I will have to wait several months."

"This reminds me of the time 30 years ago when I waited 8 hours in the cold to see Lenin's Mausoleum."

In London, 21-year-old Piotr, who works at noodle bar Wagamama, said: "It's not for me, it's to sell. I will bring them to Russia to sell them."

In the Chinese city of Shenzhen, people keen to get their hands on the new iPad waited for them to be smuggled across the border from Hong Kong.

"We don't have iPad3s yet, but some will arrive later in the day when the students deliver them to us. We'll have more supplies over this weekend," said a store operator in Shenzhen.

"Customs has become stricter, but if you take one at a time across the border, that's still pretty safe. At most they'll ask you to take it out of the box to prove that it's for self use."

Online reviews of the new iPad overwhelmingly praised Apple for its improved screen resolution.

"My epiphany came when I placed my iPad 2 next to the new model, with the same text on the screen. Letters and words that had seemed sharp on the older model five minutes earlier suddenly looked fuzzier," said one online reviewer.

Shintaro Aizawa, 16, who waited 15 hours outside a Tokyo store: said: "After this, well, I'll first of all open it up and check it's as beautiful as I thought. Then I'll get some sleep."

GOLD STANDARD

As consumers lined up around city streets to buy the iPad, one firm that took the new device apart said Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Samsung Electronics had all held onto their prized roles as key parts suppliers.

Supplying parts for Apple's iPhones and iPads, the industry's gold standards, is considered a coup for chipmakers and other manufacturers.

The inner workings of the iPad are similar to previous models, based on a "teardown" by a tinkerer from California gadget-repair firm iFixit, who queued up in Australia to get one of the new tablets and quickly took it apart for a Web blog.

IFixit said the iPad's display appears to be from Samsung, Apple's closest rival in the tablet market.

The iPad includes a Qualcomm LTE cell phone chip and a Qualcomm wireless modem for 3G and 4G. Broadcom supplies a semiconductor handling wireless tasks like WiFi and Bluetooth, according to iFixit.

The iPad's new A5X application processor, with improved graphics horsepower, is based on energy-efficient technology licensed from Britain's ARM Holdings and is manufactured by Qualcomm, as in past Apple devices.

A NAND flash memory chip, used to store media like music and video, is supplied by Toshiba. Japan's Elpida provides the DRAM chips.

The iPad teardown also revealed chips from Avago Technologies, Triquint Semiconductor and Fairchild.

Analysts recommend caution in drawing conclusions from the teardowns because Cupertino, California-based Apple sometimes uses more than one supplier for a part. What is found in one iPad may not be found in others.

Still, teardowns remain a key source of information for investors interested in betting on Apple's suppliers, and the appearance of unexpected chips can move stocks.

Friend of UK PM arrested in phone-hacking probe

LONDON -- Former News Corp chief executive and News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks and her husband Charlie Brooks, a close friend of British Prime Minister David Cameron, were arrested Tuesday in a wide-ranging investigation into phone hacking in the British media, NBC News reported.

A total of six people were arrested in the early morning on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, British police said in a statement. The charge is an indication that investigators may be focusing on a possible attempted coverup of the scope of phone hacking.

The Metropolitan Police said five men and a woman were arrested in various locations in London and surrounding countryside in a series of raids conducted between 5 a.m. (1 a.m. ET) and 7 a.m. (3 a.m. ET) Tuesday. Police said searches of the premises are ongoing.

The investigation stems from widespread wrongdoing at Rupert Murdoch's now-closed News of the World tabloid. The victims have ranged from celebrities and major politicians to the families of crime victims.

Tabloid editor got free horse from UK police

Police, who did not release any names, said a 43-year-old woman was arrested at her home in Oxfordshire and she was being questioned by police there. Also arrested were a 49-year-old man in Oxfordshire, a 39-year-old man in Hampshire, a 46-year-old man in West London, a 38-year-old man in Hertforshire and a 48-year-old man in East London.

It emerged recently that Rebekah Brooks got a free horse from the U.K. police, and that this horse was subsequently ridden by Cameron. Police are also investigating allegations of illegal payments made by some British newspapers to police officers.

News Corp executive James Murdoch is back in front of British lawmakers to answer tough questions regarding his knowledge of a phone hacking scandal involving the News of the World tabloid.

Rebekah Brooks was previously arrested in July 2011 at her apartment block in an exclusive area of Chelsea, West London, on suspicion of phone hacking and corruption.

Her husband Charlie, a former race horse trainer, reportedly tried to reclaim a computer, paperwork and a phone from a trash can outside the apartment block, saying they were his. But detectives removed the items for investigation, NBC reported.

According to a count by the BBC, the total number of arrests made in the Operation Weeting phone-hacking inquiry is 45.

Cash settlements
A judge-led inquiry into media ethics has heard extensive testimony about wrongdoing by tabloid journalists, and Murdoch's company has reached cash settlements with a number of victims.

There is also a simultaneous investigation into corrupt relations between the police and the press which has yielded a number of arrests in recent weeks.

James Murdoch insists he didn't mislead British lawmakers

An inquiry panel appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron is trying to determine why an initial police investigation into phone hacking in 2006 failed to reveal the scope of the problem.

At the time, Murdoch's executives claimed the wrongdoing was limited to one scurrilous reporter and an unprincipled private detective, both of whom were jailed.

Journalist: CNN star Piers Morgan must have known about tabloid phone hacking

The dormant police investigation was reopened last year after reporters were found to have hacked into the voicemail of a missing schoolgirl who was later found to have been murdered.

That investigation led to the resignation of Cameron's top media adviser, Andy Coulson, who had been the editor of the News of the World. Like Rebekah Brooks, Coulson has denied wrongdoing.

NBC News Correspondent Jim Maceda shares details from the testimony.

Murdoch's company has reached cash settlements with various hacking victims, including actress Sienna Miller and singer Charlotte Church, but many new cases are being brought against News International, the U.K. newspaper branch of Murdoch's global media empire.

The scandal also scuttled Murdoch's plans to purchase full control of the British broadcaster BSkyB.

Golf vs Cocaine Addiction

I?ve never been a big golf guy.? I always preferred to play sports with a little more action like basketball, boxing and wrestling; however, I am apparently getting old.? More and more of my friends are taking up a set of clubs and playing the sport of gentry everywhere.? Besides not really liking the sport, I cringe when I hear how much money these guys are spending on their golf game.? It is also interesting for me to note that it seems like once people (mostly guys admittedly) get into golf, they talk about in the same tones that cocaine addicts use to talk about their preferred vice.

?If I could golf every day, I would.?

?I?m going to try real hard to get away from the wife and kids this weekend to go golfing.?

?If I could golf <insert hallowed course here> I could die happy.?

Anyway, all this to say that I am increasingly feeling more and more pressure to take up the pastime.? I?ve been to a driving range on more than one occasion, and I?ve even played a couple rounds with buddies.? Every time, the best part was definitely the scenery and the beer.? Maybe I?m too logical, but can you fault me for coming to the conclusion that I could just go for a walk (I live in a beautiful area) with a beer and save myself the trouble of playing a game I don?t like?

?If You Consume Beer All Day Is It Still Exercise?

If it were merely the fact that I didn?t like golf, I could probably learn to appreciate some aspects of it.? For example, there are many times when I don?t like jogging, but I often get a ?runner?s high? from pushing myself, and I get the benefit of keeping my belly in check (kind of).? The larger issue for a young guy that is trying to establish a solid financial foundation to support an early retirement, is that a golf addiction may actually cost as much as the aforementioned cocaine addiction.

If you are a teacher who becomes an addict and wants to golf every day, I assume it would cost a lot more than this.? On the flip side, I hear that most business deals get done on a golf course, so maybe that?s the trade-off?? My current strategy of asking potential business contacts to spar a couple rounds with me hasn?t been working so far, so maybe I should try hypnotizing myself into liking this goofy country club ?sport.?

Is golf an acquired taste?? Am I doomed to a life outside business circles because I subscribe to the great Mark Twain quote, ?Golf is a good walk ruined,??
