Erie Catholic Bishop Donald W. Trautman has been hospitalized in Rome and has not been able to meet with Pope Benedict XVI.
The bishop became ill after arriving in Rome earlier this week and did not feel well enough to meet with the pope as scheduled Thursday, Monsignor Robert J. Smith, the diocese vicar general, said in a prepared statement today.
The bishop was hospitalized for tests and expects to meet with the pope next week, Smith said.
