Romney Gaining Ground in Michigan

It's a tale of two Michigans in the latest presidential polling numbers, with one pollster awarding the edge to Republican Mitt Romney and the other suggesting support for President Barack Obama's re-election hopes.

The polls were released on Tuesday by Mitchell Research and Rasmussen Reports. Michigan is considered one of the more important Midwestern battleground states, with 16 electoral votes at stake. The Wolverine State, which chose Obama in 2008, lost a vote following the 2010 census.

Here's a closer look at the Michigan poll numbers and Michigan presidential election news.

Romney has slight edge in one poll: The East Lansing polling firm Mitchell Research and Communications suggests Romney may be gaining ground, according to the Detroit News, with the latest poll showing he is leading the president 45 percent to 44 percent. A month ago, Michigan-native Romney was behind Obama 47 percent to 46 percent.

Rasmussen poll suggests a different lead: President Obama still has the lead as far as Rasmussen Reports is concerned in Michigan, with 48 percent to Romney's 42 percent. Five percent would vote for another candidate and another four percent remain uncommitted.

Even with a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points, it's clear from this poll that Obama maintains the lead. But even here that lead is slipping -- a June 15 poll from the same firm showed Obama up 50 percent while Romney had 42 percent.

Mike Rogers featured on Romney's website: Romney's campaign website added a statement from Michigan representative and Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Mike Rogers on Tuesday, who criticized the Obama administration for reportedly leaking national security information. "Mitt Romney has called for a thorough, independent investigation of the White House leaking, and he's right," Rogers said.

Obama's campaign prepares for 100 days out: The Michigan Digital Director for the Obama campaign suggested on Monday that volunteers should gear up for elections which would be 100 days out on Sunday. Sara Cederberg noted on Obama's election website that Lansing volunteers were preparing their get out the vote operations for the fall by registering voters.
