Lawyers: Audio is Sandusky phoning abuse victim

Lawyers representing a man claiming to be the unidentified shower victim of former football coach Jerry Sandusky say audio recordings are phone messages to their client.

Gene J. Puskar / AP

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is awaiting sentencing for sexually abusing boys, including one identified in court documents as Victim 2.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated at 2:37 p.m. ET: HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Lawyers for a man who claims to be the unknown victim abused in a Penn State shower by Jerry Sandusky in a case that led to Joe Paterno's firing say he intends to sue the university.

The?lawyers also released two audio clips that they say are phone mail messages from Sandusky to their client, referred to in court documents as Victim 2.

In the messages from September 2011, which can be heard in the links below provided by the lawyers,?Sandusky talks about moving forward and having nothing to hide. In one message, Sandusky offers an invitation to?a Penn State football game. He ends both calls with "love you."

You can hear audio of an alleged message from Sept. 12, 2011, here.

You can hear audio of an alleged message from Sept. 19, 2011, here.

The lawyers, Andrew Shubin, Justine Andronici,?Matt Casey and Joel Feller,?said in a statement that they have done an extensive investigation and gathered "overwhelming evidence" on details of the abuse.

The statement reads in part:

"Our client suffered extensive sexual abuse over many years both before and after the 2001 incident Michael McQueary witnessed in the Penn State Lasch building shower. Penn State has now admitted and there is no longer any question that its top officials could have and should have prevented these acts. Jerry Sandusky's abuse of Victim 2 and other children is a direct result of a conspiracy to conceal Sandusky's conduct and the decisions by top Penn State officials that facilitated and enabled his access to victims. We intend to file a civil lawsuit against Penn State University and others and to hold them accountable for the egregious and reckless conduct that facilitated the horrific abuse our client suffered.

Our client has to live the rest of his life not only dealing with the effects of Sandusky's childhood sexual abuse, but also with the knowledge that many powerful adults, including those at the highest levels of Penn State, put their own interests and the interests of a child predator above their legal obligations to protect him."

Penn State says it cannot comment on pending litigation.

Prosecutors have said they don't know the identity of the boy molested by Sandusky in 2001. The encounter was spotted by former graduate assistant football coach, Mike McQueary, who reported the abuse to school officials, including Paterno, but none of them told police. McQueary said he saw Sandusky and the boy -- now a grown man -- in an "extremely sexual" position in a locker room shower one night. He was a key prosecution witness at Sandusky's trial.

The victim is not named in the attorneys' statement.

Sandusky awaits sentencing after being convicted in June of 45 sex abuse counts related to molesting 10 boys, including Victim 2.

A seven-month investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, commissioned by Penn State, concluded that Paterno, then-university President Graham Spanier and two other top Penn State administrators?concealed abuse by Sandusky to avoid bad publicity, thereby enabling Sandusky's crimes to continue.

Below is a transcription of the phone mail messages:

?Sept. 12, 2011:

"?Jere. Um. I am probably not going to be able to get a hold of anybody. Um. Uh. Probably ought to just go forward. Uh. I would be very firm and express my feelings, uh, upfront. Um. But, uh, you know, there is nothing really to hide so. Um. If you want, give me a call. You can call me on my other cell phone or on this one, either one so. Alright, take care. Love you. Uh. Hope you get this message. Thanks."

?Sept. 19, 2011:

"?Just calling to see you know whether you had any interest in going to the Penn State game this Saturday. Uh. If you could get back to me and let me know, uh, I would appreciate it and when you get this message, uh, give me a call and I hope to talk to you later. Thanks. I love you.?

Romney Gaining Ground in Michigan

It's a tale of two Michigans in the latest presidential polling numbers, with one pollster awarding the edge to Republican Mitt Romney and the other suggesting support for President Barack Obama's re-election hopes.

The polls were released on Tuesday by Mitchell Research and Rasmussen Reports. Michigan is considered one of the more important Midwestern battleground states, with 16 electoral votes at stake. The Wolverine State, which chose Obama in 2008, lost a vote following the 2010 census.

Here's a closer look at the Michigan poll numbers and Michigan presidential election news.

Romney has slight edge in one poll: The East Lansing polling firm Mitchell Research and Communications suggests Romney may be gaining ground, according to the Detroit News, with the latest poll showing he is leading the president 45 percent to 44 percent. A month ago, Michigan-native Romney was behind Obama 47 percent to 46 percent.

Rasmussen poll suggests a different lead: President Obama still has the lead as far as Rasmussen Reports is concerned in Michigan, with 48 percent to Romney's 42 percent. Five percent would vote for another candidate and another four percent remain uncommitted.

Even with a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points, it's clear from this poll that Obama maintains the lead. But even here that lead is slipping -- a June 15 poll from the same firm showed Obama up 50 percent while Romney had 42 percent.

Mike Rogers featured on Romney's website: Romney's campaign website added a statement from Michigan representative and Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Mike Rogers on Tuesday, who criticized the Obama administration for reportedly leaking national security information. "Mitt Romney has called for a thorough, independent investigation of the White House leaking, and he's right," Rogers said.

Obama's campaign prepares for 100 days out: The Michigan Digital Director for the Obama campaign suggested on Monday that volunteers should gear up for elections which would be 100 days out on Sunday. Sara Cederberg noted on Obama's election website that Lansing volunteers were preparing their get out the vote operations for the fall by registering voters.

Cuba Considers More Reforms ? Miami International Business ...

Posted on by The Victoria Law Group

There are a lot of market reforms floating around like the ocean breezes in Cuba.? However, Los Castros have yet to implement any of the truly promising reforms like less restrictive travel, more private farming, even co-op farming and businesses (I guess like a kibbutz). ?When Cuba?s Parliament opened its twice annual session earlier this week, it was unclear if any of these interesting proposals will be considered.

Communing with aliens at Secret Garden Party

Jessica Griggs, careers editor

1st-DIY-Alien---Messages.jpg(Image: Flavia Fraser-Cannon)

Dancing like an idiot, losing your wellies in the mud and not being able to find the way back to your tent in the wee hours of the morning are all de rigueur parts of the festival-going experience. However, unless you are aided by some particularly effective mind-bending hallucinogenics, talking to aliens is not usually on the line-up.

But this is exactly what festival revellers were able to do on Saturday afternoon if they stumbled across the Guerilla Science tent at Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire, UK.

Over the previous two days, people had been scrawling messages to send to extraterrestrials that ranged from the semi-profound - ?When did you realise you were not alone??, to the not so profound ?Does my bum look big in Uranus?? and ?Does Justin Bieber sound as bad up there as he does down here?? on a big black board.

Yet, our potted history of attempts at extra-terrestrial communication already includes a Doritos advert and the vaginal contractions of a ballet troupe sent by an artist concerned that no information on human reproduction had ever been broadcast, in the company of which the festival messages didn?t look quite so incongruous. Jeff Lashley, a technical support engineer from National Space Centre in Leicester encoded each letter of the messages into a string of 0 and 1s and released them into the cosmos via a radio transmitter. A stream of hilarious video recording was also sent - mostly consisting of people welcoming ET with open arms: ?Come and see us, I?ll introduce you to my family?. I couldn?t help but think this would make a great beginning to the next alien invasion sci-fi flick - oh, those na?ve humans.

Continuing with the theme of alien life, Louise Preston, a geologist turned astrobiologist from the Open University, gave a captivating talk about her work simulating fake missions to the Moon, Venus and Mars at Earthly analogues such as the acidic Rio Tinto basin in Spain, places in Antarctica and in Canadian impact craters. The packed audience hung on her every word as she described how her group drops all their equipment from the air, including a fake rover known as the Bieber (who else?), before communicating with ?astronauts? from a control room as they take photos and samples of the site.

At the end of her talk, there was a stampede to the front of the tent to hold the meteorites she had brought along with her, the only collection in the country that is allowed to be taken outside the lab. It was pretty humbling to hold a piece of Mars rock that would have been thrown off the surface of the red planet during an impact, only to find its way into Earth?s orbit and eventually crash land.

2nd-DSC01388.jpg(Image: Jessica Griggs)

Arrivals from outer space weren?t the only subjects contemplated at the festival?s science hub however. After dragging my legs through the extremely sticky mud (a result of days of rain and people followed by bright sunshine) to sample some yummy festival food, I returned to the tent later in the day to find festival goers dressed as up as vaccines, complete with ?antigen? balls dangling from their hats. Their task was to make it through a manufacturing obstacle course in the quickest time without losing their immunity-giving antigens. Cue comical scenes of people dancing in a paddling pool of corn starch (to mimic the goo found in the bioreactor), then squeezing themselves through holes in pink tarpaulins during the filtration process before wriggling beneath a net supposedly representing the chromatography stage before being literally vacuum packed into a plastic bag. Hilarious stuff, but I?m not sure quite how many people left with a good idea of exactly how vaccines are made. Still, when you?re having this much fun, the ins and outs of chromatography are almost beside the point.

3rd-DSC01397.jpg(Image: Jessica Griggs)

Those who didn?t fancy putting their face so close to the mud had the opportunity to enjoy a Flavour Feast hosted by food scientist and Heston Blumenthal prot?g? Rachel Edwards Stuart. Through simple experiments, Edwards Stuart demonstrated just how multi-sensory an experience eating is. Stale crisps? Make them fresh again by listening to a crunch sound on your iPod just as you take a bite. Think you can tell the difference between the citrus Skittles and the berry flavoured ones? Not if you hold your nose.

Of course, not all subtleties in flavour are evident to everyone, as I learned. When I was able to pick out gooseberry notes typically found in white wine in a wine dyed to look red and could identify the taste of celery in a spoonful of murky gloop, Edwards Stuart let me know that, like a quarter of the population, I am a supertaster. Finally, a reason for hating rocket lettuce (arugula) that doesn?t make me sound like an epicurean philistine - the bitter taste apparently overwhelms my supertasting taste buds.

In addition to learning about the ins and outs of taste, on the last day of the festival, founding member of Guerilla Science Zoe Cormier gave us more reason to appreciate the sounds of music. She explained that the crazy burning feeling, goosebumps and shivers that headliners Orbital induced in the heaving crowd the night before are all down the rush of adrenaline and endorphins flooding through our brain when we listen to music. Rather than merely being ?auditory cheesecake? as Steven Pinker once suggested, Cormier explained how research has shown that listening to music uses more parts of the brain than any other activity and causes our neurons to pulse in synchrony with each other ?like nothing else does?. It cast the festival experience in a new light. I went home feeling that between the time spent at the Guerilla Science tent and all those hours listening and dancing to music, I must have given my brain a really good work out.

But what about the aliens? reply? Even though it would normally take years for a message to reach even our closest neighbouring star, the Guerilla Scientists must have ET on speed-dial as a message came back almost instantaneously: Peace. Bieber is our god. Please send.

Looks like Earth is not the only celestial body on which the floppy-haired one has managed to achieve world dominance.

Those Idiots In Washington Don't Know Jack ... - Business Insider

The most important issue in this year's election is the economy.

But as a survey of economists by the Chicago Booth School makes clear, the last people you should be listening to about how to fix the economy are the people in Washington.

Why?

Because they don't know jack about the economy.

(Or, more likely, they know something about the economy but they care a lot more about getting elected than fixing the economy, so they'll say whatever they think will get them elected.)

In any event, as Bloomberg writers Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers observe in a blistering editorial, the result of this perma-campaign is that "the U.S. economic policy debate is a sham."

Economists have plenty of flaws--most glaringly with respect to their ability to make forecasts--but they also know something about the economy. So a survey of ~40 leading economists, including many of each political persuasion (Republicans, Democrats, Independents), should be taken seriously.

So here's the truth about some of the key questions about our economy, answered by people who actually know something about the economy.

1. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE STIMULUS

The Political Claim: The stimulus didn't reduce unemployment.

The Truth: 92% of economists think the stimulus did, in fact, reduce unemployment.? In direct refutation of another political claim, more than half of economists also thought the benefits of the stimulus also exceeded the costs.

2. THE BANK BAILOUTS

The Political Claim: The bank bailouts were a terrible idea. They were the result of corrupt politicians bailing out their rich buddies, and they punished Main Street at the expense of Wall Street.

The Truth: Almost every economist surveyed agreed that the bank bailouts reduced unemployment.

3. HIGH GAS PRICES

The Political Claim: High gas prices are Obama's fault because he squandered money on newfangled "renewable energy" and because he refused to drill, baby, drill.

The truth: The economists unanimously agreed that higher gas prices are the result of ?market factors,? not energy policy.

4. ON TAX CUTS HELPING THE ECONOMY

The Political Claim: Cutting taxes now will lead to faster economic growth over the next five years.

The truth: No economists "strongly agree" with this claim. 35% do "agree" with it (which is certainly something). The vast majority of economists who responded to the question, however, are either "uncertain" about this or disagree with it.

?

The (Related) Political Claim: Cutting taxes now will stimulate so much economic growth that the tax cuts will pay for themselves.

The truth: Not one economist believes that cutting taxes today will lead to higher government revenue in five years. Importantly, the economists believe tax cuts will not pay for themselves even if only the top tax rate is cut.

5. ON THE REALITY OF FIXING THE BUDGET DEFICIT

The Political Claim(s): 1) Government spending is the whole problem and the budget deficit can be fixed by slashing this spending. 2) Low taxes are the problem, so the deficit can be fixed by raising them--especially on rich people.

The truth: Economists almost unanimously agree that fixing the budget crisis will require BOTH cuts in spending (specifically, Medicare and Medicaid benefits) AND increases in taxes--including increased taxes on the middle class.

6. ON THE MORTGAGE TAX DEDUCTION

The Political Claim: This deduction makes it cheaper to own a home and therefore promotes home ownership, which is good for everyone.

The Truth: This and other popular deductions distort the market.

?

So, yes, the economy is a big problem for this country, and it's critical that we fix it.

Just don't look to Washington for ideas on how to do that.
